Beyond Work

A little glimpse into the things I create when I’m not working.

A Journey of Losing Oneself

I never regretted walking away from him;
What pained me was that I had no union with myself.

It was a nameless bond, extraordinary in its own way,
Never spoken of aloud, yet carrying questions within.

He was determined, articulate, and full of light,
And I possessed none of the brilliance I saw in him.

I left him once, believing I would find myself,
I knew I was leaving but never imagined where it would lead.

I carried my dreams, my wishes, my deepest desires,
Yet somewhere along the way, I forgot to carry myself.

The chapter of action in the book of my life never opened,
The pen was in my hand, but courage had left me.

The work I had was lost; the dreams I held fell apart,
And there seemed to be nothing left for me to ask for.

My prayers grew distant, and dust gathered upon my heart,
Yet I had no words with which to tell anyone how I felt.

One day, I asked myself what love truly meant,
And I did not even understand my own feelings.

I just said “Love is not merely the longing for union;
It is also a bond between one soul and another.

It is a hidden connection between prostrations,
An act of devotion not merely a desire to be united.”

Watching him in prostration, I too would rise sometimes,
hoping perhaps this was the path that could restore my heart.

For the one I once prayed for
may his path know no stumble, nor his journey fall.

The one his Lord called to the Kaaba
I wept, yet my heart held no complaint.

I rejoiced that his Lord had chosen him
my pain was never merely the loss of him.

What broke me was the shattered mirror
showing I was no longer who I had been.

I spent so long wishing to become worthy of him,
That I forgot to measure myself by my own standards.

He had found his way to his own horizons
his journey was his own, never mine to measure against.

There was only one pain
A pain that slowly descended into my soul:

I thought I would mend myself someday,
yet time stood still, and I could not change.

We left ourselves somewhere along the way
otherwise, life held no such burden.

No wish remains for his return, nor any complaint
only a prayer for him, with nothing left to ask.

May God keep him close within His mercy,
for my heart had wished him nothing but good.

And now I ask for only one prayer
restore to me the heart I lost along the way.

No search for him remains, no longing for his return,
only grant me once again the union with myself.

The journey away from myself has been far too long,
O Lord, grant me the grace to return to who I am.

We who left ourselves somewhere upon Your path,
grant us back the beauty we once lost.

Let me seek no person, nor long for any name,
grant me the right to simply be myself.

May he be happy upon his chosen path,
grant him peace, and me the beauty of my own.

And at the end of every night, let this prayer remain
to those who lost themselves, grant them reunion with themselves.

The Meaning Behind These Words

A Journey of Losing Oneself

Story of losing oneself while trying to find oneself.

Sometimes, we walk away from someone believing that the journey will lead us back to who we are. Yet somewhere along the way, we lose our dreams, our courage, our identity, and even the quiet connection we once had with our Creator.

And perhaps, that was the real lesson.

Not every journey is meant to bring someone back to us.
Some journeys are meant to bring us back to ourselves.

This ghazal is about that return from longing to acceptance,
from comparison to self-worth, from distance to wasl,
and from losing oneself to finding the way home again

"Some people become so busy becoming worthy of someone else that they forget to become worthy of themselves. Don’t lose your identity while trying to become enough for someone else find your way back to yourself."
